Howard Shelvey was born in Sandwich in 1944 and trained at the Canterbury College of Art from 1960 to 1963. In those days the College with its huge victorian studios was still in the old Thomas Sidney Cooper School of Art building close to the Westgate Towers. The collection of animal paintings by T.S. Cooper displayed in the Canterbury Museum has been a constant inspiration to Howard over the years. His paintings in oils however are not limited to animals only but cover a wide spectrum including marine subjects. These paintings are a throwback to the years he spent building boats in the yards that once existed along the River Stour. He has painted full time since 1990.
